Talk on Thoracoscopic Surgeries In Children

Talk at MCIAPS 2017

I gave a guest lecture on “Thoracoscopic Surgeries in Children” This was at the Annual Conference of the Maharashtra Chapter Of Indian Association Of Pediatric Surgeons that was held on July 16 and 17, 2017 at Novotel, Imagica, Khopoli .

There was a great crowd (more than 100 registrations) with excellent interaction between the members. The venue was excellent and it was extremely well organized by Dr. Datta Bhusare.

Thoracoscopic surgeries are the equivalent of laparoscopic surgeries. Laparoscopic surgeries are those that are carried out in the abdomen with the aid of the laparoscope and thoracoscopic surgeries are those that are carried out in the chest.

Some common surgeries that are performed using thoracoscopy:

  • Surgery to drain pus and fluid that is accumulated in the chest, usually secondary to complicated pneumonia.
  • For biopsying various lesions when it is unsafe the biopsy the lesions using conventional ultrasound &/or CT chest.
  • For removal of various tumors in the chest (both benign & malignant) – A lot tumors can be removed quite safely (unless huge and occupying most of the chest), using thoracoscopic techniques.
  • When a person has excessive (enough to interfere with social and personal life) sweating in the palms, also called as palmar hyperhidrosis.
  • Repair of conditions where the abdominal organs herniate into the chest – also called as eventration of the diaphragm.

These are uncommon conditions that afflict the child, but as pediatric surgeons, we see a fair number of them. If your child unfortunately, does have any of the above conditions, please contact your pediatric surgeon at the earliest.
